A year ago, I wrote a post titled "Five reasons you should support your local AHL or ECHL team". With the second NHL lockout to occur in under 10 years starting tonight, it seems a good time to revisit team affiliations.
Just because there's currently no NHL hockey doesn't mean there's no hockey at all - teams are readying to begin their schedules starting in early October: the AHL drops the puck on October 12th, and the ECHL starts even earlier, on October 3rd.
Four new ECHL teams make their debut this season: the Ft. Wayne Komets, Evansville IceMen, Orlando Solar Bears, and San Francisco Bulls. The Komets and IceMen were previously CHL. The Bulls and the reborn Solar Bears are new.
It might be #Locktober for the NHL but #isitOctoberyet? for the AHL and ECHL.
Teams in bold indicate new affiliations for 2012-13.
Teams with * are in their inaugural season.
